A seed phrase (aka mnemonic or recovery phrase) is a human-readable, 12-24 word master backup that generates and represents all private keys for your wallet. It acts as a universal password, allowing you to restore an entire wallet's accounts and assets across multiple blockchains.
When you create a NUFI wallet, you'll be prompted to write down a 15-word recovery phrase (unless you're using a hardware wallet, in which case you can skip this step). You should write your recovery phrase down on a piece of paper and store it safely offline. Don't store it on your computer or in the cloud.
Important:
- If you lose your recovery phrase, it cannot be recovered. Keep your recovery phrase in a safe and secure location.
- NEVER share your recovery phrase with anyone. If you do, they can access your wallet from any location and transfer out your funds.
- NUFI support team will never ask for your recovery phrase. Beware of anyone who does.
- We require you to set a wallet password as additional protection. If you lose your password, you can use the recovery phrase to recover your wallet.
The basics:
- A recovery phrase represents one or more private keys (which is the credential needed to grant full access to an account or wallet).
- A recovery phrase comes in lengths of 12, 15, 18, 21, or 24 words and is interoperable with other wallets.
- Most recovery phrases are generated using English words chosen from a list of 2048 words (using the BIP-39 standard).
- Words that are too similar are not used. For instance, 'man' is in the BIP-39 word list, but 'men' is not.
- You must always use lower case letters when entering your recovery phrase.
